How to Get the Most Out of Online and Mobile Banking

Online and mobile banking gives busy people like you convenient and safe ways to bank - anytime and virtually anywhere!

To get the most out of those services, here’s a guide on the banking tasks you can do online when you open an account with Mercer Savings Bank.

Online Banking: The Basics

With online banking, you have the freedom to monitor your accounts, pay your bills, and keep an eye out for fraud, all within the comfort of your own home and on your own schedule. Even better, there aren’t any fees for online services! It’s also a great way to consolidate all of your trips. No more need to come into a bank branch to cash most checks, for instance.

The Benefit of Online Banking

The primary benefit of online banking is the convenience it offers. With online banking, you aren’t limited by bank hours — services are available 24/7. For example, if you need to find out your checking account balance at 10 p.m. on a Sunday, all you need to do is go online.

Additionally, online banking makes it more convenient to monitor your account. Not only is this beneficial when it comes to balancing your checkbook, but it also helps you keep an eye out for fraudulent transactions, which have recently been on the rise.

Mobile Banking: The Basics

Much like online banking, mobile banking offers you more convenience and freedom. You aren’t tied to the bank’s hours — or even your computer.

With mobile banking, you can access the same banking services on your phone or tablet as you would on your computer.

The Many Benefits of Mobile Banking

With mobile banking, you can now do your banking any day, at any time, in any place. For example, did you get off work later than you thought and couldn’t make it to the bank in time to deposit your check? No worries. With mobile banking, you can make a mobile deposit into your account by simply taking a picture of your check.

You no longer need to take a physical trip across town to make changes to your account. Simply pull up the mobile website or app on your phone and make any needed changes — saving time and gas.

Is It Safe to Bank on My Phone?

You can trust that your mobile banking is secure. Just like using your standard bank account, security measures are in place to keep your privacy intact. Through special verification and steps of authorization, you never need to worry about losing access or having your account hacked.

Mercer Savings Bank eProducts

At Mercer Savings Bank, we make it easy for you to bank online and on your mobile devices. These are some of the most popular services:

CardValet

One of our products, CardValet, gives you the ability to turn your bank card on and off, set location and spending alerts, and view your transaction history — all from your phone.

For example, you can set it to notify you every time your card is swiped. Or, if those notifications are starting to pile up, you can set it to notify you if a purchase over a certain amount is made. You can also turn your card off — this is handy if you misplace the card and want to look for it without worrying about it being stolen.

CardValet Benefits:

  • Receive alerts when your card is used.
  • Restrict card use to a specific area.
  • Set spending limits.
  • Turn your debit card on and off to prevent use.
  • Review your account balance and recent card transactions.
  • Specify purchase thresholds by merchant types, such as retail stores, groceries, or gas.
  • Prevent unauthorized charges if your debit card is lost or stolen.

How do you use it?

If you’re a Mercer Savings Bank customer, you have access to CardValet. You can download the free app for your phone on Google Play or the App Store simply by searching for “CardValet” in the store on your phone.

Online Bill Pay

Online bill pay offers a whole new level of convenience when it comes to paying bills. With online bill pay, you can put all your vendors in one spot (such as utilities, cell phone bill, cable, etc.) as opposed to visiting each website separately.
Easily automate payments so you never miss a payment again. You can also see when your bills are due.

Benefits of Online Bill Pay:

  • Pay all your bills in one spot
  • Automate payments
  • Convenient and easy bill management

How do you use it? Once you’ve signed into your online banking account, simply click on your Mercer Savings Bank checking account and click the Bill Payment button.

At Mercer Savings, we also require vendors and staff to proactively ensure systems have appropriate and adequate security measures in place. We take your security seriously and are committed to protecting your information as you bank online.

Tips For Getting the Most Out of Online Banking

Check your account often

There’s no strict guideline for how often you should check, but it’s a good idea to check your transactions once or twice a week, or even daily. That way you can make sure your balance is right where it should be.

Stay Secure with These Online and Mobile Banking Safety Tips

As we’ve discussed in the sections above, your bank takes your online security seriously.

However, there are some things you can do on your end to help keep the account as secure as possible. After all, you can’t be too careful!

How to Stay Safe When Banking Online

Follow these tips to protect your information:

Set and change passwords—and do it often. We know you’ve heard this one before, but it’s worth repeating: create a different and unique password for all financial and personal accounts. Change your password several times a year—you could do it at the start of each season, so it’s easy to remember.

Check your accounts regularly

Check accounts regularly. The best way to prevent identity theft is to monitor your bank and credit card account activity statements. Also make sure to check insurance and investment accounts, utilities and services that have been set up with automatic payments, and online accounts like Amazon or eBay that may be tied to your credit cards or financial accounts.

don't click on link in email

Don’t click that email link. Never provide bank, credit card, or other financial information via email. If you get an email from an unfamiliar address claiming to be someone from your bank and they ask for information, don’t send it. Don’t click on the links in the email or reply to it. Your bank will not ask you to share sensitive information via email.

More About Online and Mobile Banking Safety

Here are some more resources related to maintaining online and mobile security.

Online and Mobile Banking Services FAQ

Generally, it’s because either the username or the password was entered incorrectly. They are both case sensitive.

Your password will expire every 6 months. You will be notified the first time you log in after the password has expired.

All of your personal accounts will automatically appear in your online banking. You don’t have to do anything to add them.

The autosave option is not available on retail internet banking. It is most likely a setting on your computer.

This is a security feature. Our online banking system knows what devices you use regularly. If you are using a different device than normal, you will be required to answer a security question.  To bypass this on your regular device, select “Don’t Challenge Me On This Computer.”

You can click on the “Forgot Password” link and receive a temporary password by email. You can also call us, and we can give you a temporary password.

Due to Regulation E, all transfers done electronically must be done through statement accounts.

When making a transfer from one account to another, you must leave at least $10.00 in the account.

You can make principal-only payments to your loan; however, to be able to do this your regular monthly payment must already be paid.

You can transfer funds through Web Pay. Enter the information and a check will be sent for deposit to your account.

Online account history is retained for 45 days. To see a longer history, sign up for eStatements, which allows you to view up to 18 months of account history.

In most cases, this is because your online banking is locked. We can unlock your online account and if necessary give you a temporary password that you can use to log in and change it. This must be done through your online banking. You can’t change your password within the mobile app.

The method of payment (electronic, single check, or draft check) is determined by whether the payee is set up to receive electronic payments, your payment history, recent activity, and the amount of your payment (from Fiserv).

If this happens, please contact us. First, we need to determine the type of payment, electronic or check. Also, we need to make sure if it was a check, that the address it was sent to is correct.  We will set up a case with Partner Care and they will research the issue. Depending on the status of the check, we may be able to put a stop payment on it. It is possible that we might need to do a conference call with the payee and the customer on the line to resolve this.
