Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

Whether you’re opening your first checking account or setting up business banking for a growing company, Mercer Savings Bank makes the process as easy—and secure—as possible.

To make your visit to the bank smooth and efficient, here’s a guide to what you’ll need to bring with you, and how to get started online.

Why We Need This Information

When you open a new account, we’re required to confirm your identity and gather a few key details. This is part of how all financial institutions help keep customers’ accounts secure and prevent fraud. It also ensures we understand who owns or controls the account.

If you’re adding other individuals, beneficiaries, or signers, we’ll need their information too.

What to Bring for a Personal Account

When you’re ready to open a checking or savings account, here’s what you’ll need:

✅ Identification

  • Valid driver’s license, state-issued ID, or passport
    • If the address isn’t current, bring proof of your current address (like a utility bill or lease).
  • OR, if you don’t have a government-issued photo ID, bring two of the following alternative identification documents:
    • Birth certificate
    • Social Security card or completed IRS Form 4029
    • Proof of address

If you’re opening a joint account, we’ll also need the joint owner’s information.

What to Bring for a Business Account

Business accounts require a few more documents to verify the business itself and who is authorized to access the account.

✅ Business Documentation

  • Proof of EIN (Employer Identification Number)
  • Proof your business is registered, such as:
    • Business license
    • Articles of incorporation or organization
    • State of Ohio or Indiana registration paperwork

✅ Signers

Anyone who will be able to access or manage the account should bring:

  • Valid photo ID
  • Personal information (name, address, SSN, etc.)
  • Signature (for our records)

✅ Beneficial Ownership Info

Federal guidelines require us to document who owns or controls your business. For each beneficial owner (someone who owns 25% or more or has significant control), we’ll need:

  • Full legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • SSN or valid ID number

✅ For Nonprofits

If you’re opening an account for a nonprofit, bring documentation confirming your nonprofit status—such as your IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter.
