If you’re ready to leave your old bank behind and join Mercer Savings, we’re ready to help every step of the way. Switching banks doesn’t have to be complicated — especially when you have a local team in your corner.

Here’s how to make the move easy and stress-free:

Step 1: Open Your New Account

Start by opening your new account at Mercer Savings. Whether you’re looking for checking, savings, or a CD, we’ll help you choose the option that fits your life.

Not sure what to bring? Check out our recent post for everything you need to make your appointment smooth and stress-free. (link to blog post)

You can also begin the process online to save time: mercersavings.com

Once your account is open:

  • Your debit card is printed right here in the office, so you don’t have to wait for it to arrive in the mail
  • We’ll help you sign up for online banking and bill pay — either on your own or with hands-on assistance in the branch

From day one, you’ll have the tools and support you need to move your banking over with confidence.

Step 2: Move Your Payments and Deposits

Next, switch over anything that automatically sends money in or out of your old account, including:

  • Direct deposits (paychecks, Social Security, retirement income, etc.)
  • Automatic payments (utilities, subscriptions, insurance premiums, loan payments, memberships, and more)

Important tip: Review a full year of statements from your old bank — not just the last month or two. Some payments happen quarterly, semi-annually, or even once a year, and this step helps ensure nothing gets overlooked.

Don’t forget about tax refunds. If you typically receive your tax return by direct deposit, make yourself a note to update that information when you file next. Otherwise, you could find yourself chasing down a refund sent to a closed account.

Our team is happy to help you review your list and make sure everything is switched over smoothly.

Step 3: Close Your Old Account

Once your deposits and payments are successfully running through your new Mercer Savings account, it’s time to close your old one.

To move your remaining balance, you can:

  • Write a check from your old account and deposit it into your new Mercer Savings account
  • Or request a cashier’s check from your former bank to bring in and deposit

Before closing the account, be sure to:

  • Cancel any online bill pay tied to your old bank
  • Confirm all automatic transactions have fully cleared

And when you’re done? Bring us your old checks and debit card — we’ll securely shred them for you.
