Marriage is an exciting new chapter—and it often comes with a few important updates to your personal information, like your name and address. To help you stay organized (and avoid hiccups with your bank accounts), here’s a smart order to handle those changes:

  1. Start with the Social Security Administration (SSA)

Your first step should be updating your name with the SSA.
Visit your local SSA office or apply online at ssa.gov. You’ll need:

  • A completed application for a new Social Security card
  • Proof of identity (such as your driver’s license)
  • An original or certified copy of your marriage certificate

Once processed, your new name will be shared with the IRS—helping you avoid future tax mismatches.

  1. Update Your Ohio Driver’s License (BMV)

Next, head to the Ohio BMV to update your name and address.
If your current legal name is different than your birth certificate or passport, you’ll need to bring original or certified documents to connect your identity, such as:

  • Marriage certificate or license
  • Divorce decree, court-ordered name change (if applicable)

Changed your address too?
Bring proof of your new residence, such as:

  • A utility bill
  • Lease agreement
  • Updated license with your new address

You can view a complete list of acceptable documents at bmv.ohio.gov.

  1. Visit Mercer Savings Bank

Once your name and/or address is updated on your government-issued ID, stop in to see us. We’ll help you:

  • Update your name on existing accounts
  • Reissue debit cards or checks
  • Update your address
  • Open new joint or savings accounts if needed

Please bring your updated driver’s license, marriage certificate, and proof of address (if applicable). This helps us keep your records accurate and ensure smooth access to your accounts.

Don’t Forget These
After you’ve updated the basics, make sure to update:

  • Insurance policies and retirement accounts (especially beneficiaries)
  • Medical and pharmacy records
  • Credit cards, utility bills, and your digital wallet
  • Your passport, voter registration, and vehicle registration

Merging Finances? Start with a Conversation.

One of the biggest shifts couples face is blending their finances. Before merging bank accounts, take time to talk openly about:

  • Income, debts, and credit scores
  • Financial habits and goals
  • Shared vs. separate accounts

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Some couples prefer a joint checking account for shared expenses like rent, groceries, or utilities, while others maintain individual accounts and contribute to shared costs proportionally.

Tip: A joint account can help simplify bill payments—and in the event of a partner’s death, the surviving spouse may have faster access to those funds.

Set Yourself Up for Financial Success

Once your accounts are aligned, take time to review your financial picture as a team. Here are a few smart steps:

  • Use Direct Deposit Wisely
You can split your paycheck into different accounts—great for saving automatically into your emergency fund, vacation savings, or a shared goal.
  • Create a Budget Together
Planning how to spend and save helps minimize surprises and keeps both partners on the same page.
  • Review Beneficiaries and Wills
Update your estate planning documents and consider whether a will or power of attorney needs to be adjusted.
  • Plan for the Future
Talk about retirement goals, long-term savings, and insurance coverage so you’re prepared for the road ahead.
