This month’s recipient of the Mercer Savings Bank Giving Mission donation is the Celina Fire Department!
The Celina Fire Department serves residents of Celina and is located at 202 N. Main St. in the historic old City Hall building, which was originally built in 1890. The old city hall building sprang up during the city’s first growth spurt, back in the 1880s, which was driven by the discovery of oil and natural gas deposits in the area. By 1886, Celina was a bustling new community with three newspaper offices, five churches, and two banks.
The Celina Fire Department consists of a single station, which provides both firefighting and other emergency services to residents. Celina Fire Department Chief Doug Wolters says he got involved with the fire department back in 1983 as a volunteer. In 1990, he was hired full time. “And I’ve been here ever since!” he says.
Wolters loves what he does. “I enjoy helping people,” he says. “I also became a paramedic in ‘92. I really enjoy that. We don’t have a hospital close by, so we often take care of really sick people.”
Donations like the one from Mercer Savings bank are generally used to purchase additional equipment for the firefighters. This specific donation will go toward the purchase of tables and chairs for firefighter training sessions, which are held in the fire truck room.
“We appreciate how the community has supported us over the years,” says Wolters. “We’ve got numerous donations through different groups, and that’s enabled us to get a tremendous amount of equipment. The community is really good to us, and we really appreciate it.”
